Opinion: Mac Pro is not too expensive, it offers something that nothing else does

We all understand. The Mac Pro is expensive. $ 6,000 is a large amount of money to spend on a new computer and monitor combination. If you maximize it by more than $ 50,000, it stuns your mind.

But there is a big difference between expensive and expensive. And when you delve into the details, it is clear as the day. Apple is offering something you can’t find anywhere else, and the people Apple points to will probably love it.

Changing Perceptions

Apple is known for its consumer-oriented products, such as the iPhone and iPad. I doubt that Apple complains about that, but there is an inconvenience. Every time you launch a product for professionals, everyone judges the company according to consumer criteria. Apple does not work like its different rivals of Android and PC since it does not manufacture products for a platform that someone else has created. It has the platform for which all its products are made, which means that it is the same Apple that offers products for very different audiences.

Part of this is Apple’s fault for launching the “Pro” label so carelessly. The Mac Pro is not a “professional” product to the same extent as the iPhone 11 Pro or iPad Pro. It’s something more niche, but much more unique. The public for whom the Mac Pro is designed does not care too much about the price.

Does anyone really believe that James Cameron or Steven Spielberg make their movies on a Chromebook or MacBook Air? Of course not, they have incredibly powerful teams at their disposal. At that level, the price is not a concern, the important thing is to make your work expensive and important. The more powerful, the better.

That’s exactly what the Mac Pro points to. It’s Apple’s attempt to meet the needs of people like Ridley Scott and Calvin Harris. Yes, it is expensive, but if I needed a 28-core computer with 1.5TB of RAM, would I really be discussing the price?

Mac Pro Opinions

A Truly Unique Offer.

Thats not all. Mac Pro does not try to compete with a standard PC workstation. Offer something unique.

When you are a company like Apple, you have a lot of bargaining power with your suppliers. If you reach them with a proposal for a custom component in your top-secret project, they will listen to you. And that kind of unique and personalized component is what Mac Pro is all about.

Take, for example, ProRes accelerator cards. These are custom components that can radically accelerate video editing tasks in applications such as Final Cut Pro X. Apple says that each of these PCIe x16 cards can “decode up to three 8K ProRes RAW video streams and 12 4K ProRes video streams. RAW in real-time. ” That is something you won’t get on any other computer. While the high-end camera manufacturer Red used to offer the Rocket-X accelerator card, it has now been discontinued, and cost $ 6,750. That’s more than the entire Mac Pro base model.

Or how about the Mac Pro MPX modules? Each Mac Pro has two, which allow you to add additional components to increase the already impressive power of the computer. For example, you can add two AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo units, each of which houses two graphics cards, which gives you four heavy-duty GPUs with graphics. Or you can add a 32TB RAID storage MPX module, greatly increasing your storage space.

Each MPX module has 500 W of power and offers Thunderbolt integration.
So yes, it has an unprecedented price.

If this were another Mac Pro trash can, I would be singing a different tune. But the extreme power, customization, and optimization offered by Mac Pro feel like a truly unique offer. It may not be made for you, but it was never supposed to be that way.
